Emma Goes Solo...

Emma's career has gone from acting, TV presenting and then finally to music. She was meant to star in a production of Sleeping Beauty, but it seems that it was one of those projects that disappeared just like the Spice Girls cartoon- now whatever happened to that?

Emma had her own TV show on VH1- which proved more successful than Melanie B's BBC2 show. She also presented other shows such as SMTV-LIVE on ITV every now and again. Her time at the Silvia Young school had obviously helped her, as she was very natural, and retained the girl-next-door image which the Spice Girls had created in their early days.

Emma's solo career began with a collaboration in November 1999 with Tin Tin Out, with a song called 'What I Am'. It was up against none other than her former band mate Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) with her track 'Lift Me Up'. Alike Victoria's chart battle in the summer of 2000, Emma's battle was hyped by the press. Alike Victoria also she lost out, and alike Victoria it was to the number 2 slot! But, Geri's publicity drive went more to the extreme, because she even used Chris Evans (UK TV presenter) to help her sell more records! This can me seen as a marketing drive because Geri soon ended the romance the following week!

Emma had great sales with 'What I Am' and Virgin were letting her make the decisions in what direction her solo career was going to take. She spent time writing the album, and wrote 40 tracks, and only 11 made it to the album.

In April 2001 she released the single 'What Took You So Long?', which kept top artists off the top slot. She was the first Spice Girl EVER to stay at the number 1 spot for more than one week as a solo artist.

Her album 'A Girl Like Me' was also released and reached number 4 in the UK album charts. By October 2001 she has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.

In August 2001 she followed up 'What Took You So Long' with 'Take My Breath Away' which also did very well, reaching number 5 in the charts.

Virgin are also using some of the tracks that she wrote for her album (but didn't make it) to go to other acts.

Her next single off 'A Girl Like Me' was 'We're Not Gonna Sleep Tonight'  which was released on December 10th in the UK.  It proved to be a bad choice for Emma, achieving the worst Spice Girl Chat number ever (#20)... Poor girl.  But, Emma will be touring the U.K in 2002 as well as the rest of Europe.  More information on that as it comes...

Emma has also confirmed that no more singles will be taken off 'A Girl Like Me', and that she has already started to work on a second album...
