Victoria Goes Solo...
Victoria's solo plans were a mystery to us all after the
Spice Tour of 1998. With Brooklyn being born, and her wedding to arrange
she had plenty to think about. Anyway, we didn't expect any musical
projects from her; especially after the media onslaught: 'Posh Can't
Sing'.
Only now do we know that she had actually auditioned for the 2001 hit
movie Charlie's Angels. After all she was clearly the best actor in
Spiceworld: The Movie. Unfortunately, she was never destined to star in
the film.
More publicly she made a cat walk appearance, which only added to the
media hype over her figure; did Mrs Beckham have an eating disorder?
Victoria became aware that the other girls had all gone
out into new work, and felt that she had been left behind. Though, she
was always in the papers the amount of work Victoria did was limited to
charity work.
Victoria was encouraged by David to pursue her own solo career, as she
lacked the self confidence. As she recored with the Spice Girls on their
Third Album she worked with various people and made new musical
contacts.
On Radio there was a song 'Out Of Your Mind' on the air, and everyone
was trying to guess who was on the duet with Dane Bowers on his follow
up to 'Buggin' with the Truesteppers. It turned out that it was actually
Victoria- this was a surprise as it is very unexpected for a Spice Girl
to try and make herself into a serious garage star!
The song was first seen at Party In The Park, and Victoria was
criticised for being one of the few acts that mimed. This media hype was
soon nothing when the press began an every-growing battle between
Victoria and Spiller who were releasing songs on the same day.
Sophie-Ellis-Bextor and Victoria were on all of the major news, playing
down the competition.
Victoria promoted the single like crazy, and did signings all around the
country as well as lots of TV promotion. She did win the promotional
battle but the same could not be said for the chart battle. The rivalry
between the two releases had built the public up so much that we were
all very interested by the mid-week figures. As expected Spiller was in
the lead with their song 'Groovejet ( If This Ain't Love)'.
On the UK Saturday morning show 'CD:UK' it was announced that Victoria
had made a lot of ground since Wednesday and that she was the Saturday
chart number 1! But, on the Sunday, as everyone listened to the UK Top
40 on Radio 1, it was to be found that Spiller had very good Saturday
sales. Both songs had phenomenal sales that week, and stayed around for
a long time.
Victoria seemed to then be apparently away from the music scene
preparing her solo album- though the Posh 'n' Becks saga kept us up to
date with Victoria's movements.
In September of 2001 Victoria released, 'Not Such An Innocent Girl', the
first song to be taken from her album. The media was very quick to hype
up a battle between her and Kylie, though this time people seemed to
ignore all the hype. Kylie's tune, 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' did
trounce Victoria, who only notched up number 6.
Despite the release of her book Posh had failed, or in the media's eyes
anyway. Her book 'Learning To Fly' has gone down very well so far, and
her appearance on the BBC 1 show Parkinson also did her good. She sung a
new song from her album called 'I.O.U' LIVE, which proved her critics
wrong.
The self-titled album reached number 10 in October 2001, and her book
'Learning To Fly' has topped the book charts! Her next single from the
album will be 'A Mind Of It's Own', and will hit the shops in February.
